Efforts on Protected Areas are serving to unlock the potential of protected areas, including indigenous and community conserved areas, to conserve biodiversity while contributing towards sustainable development.

Recognizing the potential of protected areas (PAs) to support both biodiversity conservation and human development, UNDP-GEF assists countries to establish governance frameworks thatĀ  strategically expand and strengthen the management and financing of PAs at the systems level, so they are effectively managed and sustainably financed. UNDP-GEF employs broad landscapeĀ  management approaches working within and beyond the boundaries of protected areas to manage a mosaic of uses, in order to deliver ecological, economic and social benefits. UNDP-GEF promotes a rights based management paradigm based on co-management among communities living in or near PAs, government and, in some instances, the private sector. Under this highlighted initiative, Community Conservation Areas (CCAs) and Indigenous Community Conserved Areas (ICCAs) will be expanded and strengthened.
